The GPS Tracker Specialist Discusses Competitiveness and Future Industry Growth

2011-8-11

Shenzhen Xexun Technology Co. Ltd is underscoring value additions through feature integration. It is likewise strengthening its customization capability to meet buyers' specifications.

The supplier provides a range of GPS trackers for different applications. It has developed what is said to be the world's smallest GPS tracker.

Below are excerpts of Global Sources' interview with Shenzhen Xexun board chairman Qi Feihong about growth prospects in the line and measures undertaken by the company to boost competitiveness.

What are the growth prospects for car GPS trackers in the next 12 months?

Despite being a relatively new technology, the penetration rate for GPS trackers has been strong. Continued feature upgrades, especially in terms of performance reliability, and innovations on design will spur further adoption in coming months.

Widening applications will also help boost the line's competitiveness. For example, current-generation GPS personal trackers are suitable for both the elderly and children. Car GPS trackers are likewise gaining popularity, and their added function for logistics management is expected to prop up sales.

What are your company's export sales projections for the next six months?

We expect sales volume to double, especially with the global economy recovering. In China, the employment situation is improving and property rates are climbing. Domestic and overseas sales of electronics and IT products are also showing signs of an upswing.

To grab more orders, we will continue to invest in advertising. We are planning to increase shipments to the US to boost our presence there.

How do you boost competitiveness in this fast-growing industry?

Besides integrating more features and functions, we can customize GPS devices to buyers' specifications.

To ensure high quality, we are working to reduce our repair rate, if not make it zero. We implement QC across the different stages of manufacture, beginning with raw material sourcing through finished product and preshipment inspection. The sampling ratio for the last is about two-thirds.

We are currently providing lifetime maintenance support for all our products.

How do you differentiate yourself from the competition?

We pioneered GPS tracker manufacture in the country so we will take advantage of this expertise. In addition, we leverage product quality. But while we ensure high performance, we undertake cost reduction programs to be able to offer competitive prices.

With rising production costs in China, do you think exporters will lose business to other emerging manufacturing centers such as Mexico, Vietnam, Bangladesh and India? Why or why not?

For some industries this is a possibility, given the increase in not just labor outlay but also raw material spending. For GPS trackers, however, the comprehensive supply chain in Guangdong province will keep makers in the area.

Guangdong's support industries for component and raw material sourcing, R&D and even third-party service providers enable suppliers based in the province to shorten time to market and manage costs better. This will be enough reason to stay in the area despite the challenges posed by the labor shortage.
